A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story

In this cartoon adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on gathering baby teeth of sleeping children and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly creature he expected.

An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from one another, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people together. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be self-centered sorts, given to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.

Of course, this scenario needs a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, if not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression

There aren’t all that many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content teenagers view these days in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to become their new all-time fave, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
