The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
