“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the penalty manageable for the billionaire owner.
