Heat & Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins Following Player Detentions
Miami scored 86 first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat secured a overwhelming 146-114 victory against the Grizzlies in their initial NBA match since player Rozier was detained over alleged illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a extensive federal investigation into sports betting. The two individuals contest the allegations.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up 86 opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37 year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and later said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo said. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is very dear to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he faces the situation."
Portland also secured their first game after the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the team to a decisive 139 to 119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the fairness of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner also mentioned an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.
"We investigated that situation and were open about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.
"So, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they announced recently was an indictment.
"Moreover two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
