Keith Baker and Monte Cook Will Lead Sessions at Dungeon Master University
Beginning in 2018, a specialized event organizer has been hosting immersive events where experienced game masters lead Dungeons & Dragons games in old manors in the UK and at a U.S. castle resort. The comprehensive packages are widely appreciated among long-time dungeon masters who rarely get the opportunity to actually play themselves, and they often ask for tips from experts on topics ranging from improvisation and puzzle design to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.
In response, the organizers began developing a systematic approach to tackle these topics, which led to the establishment of Dungeon Master University. The first session is set for the start of 2026 at an Atlanta campus.
“It's possible to view thousands of YouTube videos on almost every theme and learn quite a lot, but the idea was that nothing compares to an in-person experience together with other dungeon masters, where direct communication with expert teachers and other game masters often in the same boat and aim to improve their skills,” noted the dean of Dungeon Master University.
Workshop Options and Cost Levels
Game masters can opt for options ranging from $995 to two thousand five hundred dollars, depending on the level of access they desire with the instructors. The base tier includes one of four courses:
- Foundational Skills: Teaches the basics of leading a game.
- Story Arc Development: Is dedicated to designing extended campaigns.
- Worldbuilding: Concentrates on the development of worlds.
- Industry Advancement: Aimed at DMs who want to learn more about the tabletop profession.
All workshops includes eight hours of training split over 48 hours.
“The workshops are created so that you depart having immediate practical outcomes, increased self-assurance, and many practical techniques,” Carl noted. “These aren't simple talks and they exceed pre-recorded material. These are sessions that you can participate in, learn from, and then return to your group the week after and apply in your local game.”
Seasoned Educators
Most classes are taught by duo of instructors. Setting design is led by the founder of Monte Cook Games and Keith Baker, both teaching the art of worldbuilding.
Career building features four different teachers, such as an author on gaming puzzles, a podcast co-host, and an early professional game master. The expanded teaching staff is intended to offer targeted guidance to participants with particular aims.
“Certain participants aim to start their own live gameplay show and present their narratives with the world, several plan to produce and write original content,” Carl explained. “Others simply wish to ask, What does it take to be a DM at a program like D&D in a Castle? What are the skills that I need? Can anyone do it?”
Premium Packages
A $1.5K enhanced option offers access to a welcome reception, a introductory package, and a 30-minute office hour appointment with one of the faculty. This marks the first Dungeon Master Academy, though the organizers has previously run similar events during breaks between game sessions at their immersive experiences.
“One could practically host an entire weekend just on one-on-one meetings for career game masters,” Carl observed. “I don’t know if that’s the best use of each attendee's hours – In my opinion the coursework and the lab work is extremely important – but I think it’s going to be among the most sought-after parts of the program.”
The $2,500 platinum tier offers an hour of one-on-one time and the opportunity to manage an adventure for several participants plus an instructor, who will then offer feedback and coaching.
“The goal is for the teacher to review whatever the DM is interested in: I have difficulty with improvisation or I get blocked in specific fight encounters. May I present a scene for you and get feedback on where I excel and need improvement?” Carl said. “Perhaps they want to receive input and advice on a particular setting that they’ve been developing.”
Next Steps
Feedback from the first event will help determine future Dungeon Master University sessions. Carl mentioned that possible changes could include expanding one-on-one sessions, extending the program to a longer period, or trying out alternative workshop formats.
“I anticipate that we conduct these regularly,” Carl expressed. “I truly hope to see numerous academy events in a calendar year, in various locations, and in different countries. The feedback has been extremely positive. We're extremely satisfied with current developments and I believe it would be amazing to be able to do this in partnership with major events.”
