Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.
He stated in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once presided over the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.
Email Communications
The recently released messages showed that the official communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it respected Summers' determination to step down.
"We value his significant contributions and the perspective he brought to the governing body," the organization remarked.
Congressional Action
This development comes after the two houses of the US legislature decided on recently to approve a legislation that would require the US justice department to release its documents on the case.
The legislation will subsequently proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he expects to endorse the bill, after modifying his position on the subject following objections from his supporters.
Message Details
A batch of Epstein-connected messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to link the official to prominent global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were made available with the general audience, the former official expressed he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to maintain communicating with the financier".
He added that he wanted "to restore faith and mend relationships with the people most important to me".
Professional History
The economist served in high-level positions under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He led the institution from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments previously on this week, he indicated he would maintain his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in DC where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was no longer affiliated with the group.
He entered the directorate of the AI company, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive Sam Altman.
