Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza experienced some of the most intense internal clashes since hostilities commenced, pitting Hamas security forces against gunmen from the al-Mujaida family - a major clans in southern Gaza.

As stated by Hamas officials, its security personnel carried out an operation in the district to apprehend people suspected of cooperating with Israel.

Conversely, eyewitness reports recounted an offensive by about fifty armed individuals riding in five pickup trucks, equipped with automatic weapons and a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher, who stormed the al-Mujaida quarter and fatally shot five members from the family.

Armed relatives immediately retaliated, triggering hours-long confrontations with heavy exchanges of fire.

Information circulating on social media – hard to authenticate – claim that more than 11 Hamas members were fatally wounded, with multiple remains allegedly paraded in the public areas.

Recordings widely shared online, which remain unverified, seem to depict multiple bloodied bodies in military fatigues, along with a narration alleging they were members of Hamas's "military division".

Separate video captured bursts of gunfire and an RPG hitting a housing structure in the neighborhood.

Community leaders eventually mediated to mediate between the conflicting parties, culminating in an handover of casualties designed to limit the intensification.

Even though the precise reasons continue to be ambiguous, the incident has intensified concern among Gaza residents.

Many fear that proliferation of arms, friction between major families and Hamas's control over governance could develop into scenes resembling internal conflict in a territory already gripped by forced relocation, destruction, and fear of further lawlessness.

Experts indicate that the degree of hostility which Hamas faces from its various rivals – groups that have been suppressed during its seventeen-year governance – is thought to be a key factor driving the organization to oppose the peace proposal.
